Zyprexa maker Eli Lilly maintains there is no conclusive information on Zyprexa showing the antipsychotic drug has a risk of deadly and serious side effects. For the 288 reported diabetes cases in Zyprexa patients, with 23 of them resulting in death, that information on Zyprexa is conclusive enough. The available information on Zyprexa was enough to lead Japan and the European Union to require that the company include a clear diabetes risk warning on Zyprexa product information sheets.
The FDA has been criticized for failing to provide adequate information on Zyprexa to U.S. doctors and patients. Unlike other countries, the FDA has not required that Zyprexa labeling or informational packets provide more information on Zyprexa to make it clearer of possible risks of the drug. Though risks of the drug might be considered to outweigh its risks in severe cases, Zyprexa is being indicated more and more for minor conditions that could be treated with a less risky drug if patients were given the information on Zyprexa available. Consumer advocacy group Public Citizen has openly criticized the FDA’s failure to provide more information on Zyprexa to patients and people considering Zyprexa treatment.
