Zyprexa is an antipsychotic drug used for the treatment of schizophrenia. Eli Lilly and Co.’s best selling product, Zyprexa has recently experienced earnings losses, which has been attributed to reports of Zyprexa side effects. In May 2003, studies indicated use of antipsychotic drugs such as Zyprexa had minimal benefits that were heavily dependent up on particular symptoms. In addition, a growing alarming for potential Zyprexa side effects that could result in death were occurring.
The U.S. does not require that comparative safety and effectiveness studies be performed, so essentially Zyprexa’s approval did not have to prove it had an increased safety and efficacy level to existent schizophrenia treatments. The link between Zyprexa and diabetes has continued to be made over the years, and even though other countries have already changed Zyprexa labeling to include Zyprexa side effect warnings. Zyprexa troubles continues to grow as Zyprexa side effects lawsuits have been filed, sales of Zyprexa has decreased, and the FDA may require antipsychotic drugs to highlight risk of weight gain and diabetes on labeling, which was previously not frequently associated to Zyprexa.
Public Citizen consumer group has been critical of the FDA because the group does not believe it has informed physicians or Zyprexa patients of the potentially deadly risks involved with using Zyprexa.
On March 6, 2008, the State of Alaska provided its opening arguments in a lawsuit against the maker of the schizophrenia drug Zyprexa.
