drug_recall zoloftRecent studies have revealed that the benefits of Zoloft for teens may not outweigh the serious potential risks associated with taking this prescription anti depressant medication. Zoloft is a drug in the class known as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) that are used to treat a variety of psychological ailments.
The FDA has only approved Zoloft for teens in order to treat obsessive compulsive disorder. The FDA has not specifically approved Zoloft for teens in treating other approved conditions such as panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, depression, post traumatic stress disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Prozac is the only SSRI that has been specifically approved to treat pediatric depression.
Studies on Zoloft for teens have not been sufficiently conducted in order to determine this drug’s efficiency for treating conditions that have not been specifically approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Some preliminary studies have found that Zoloft for teens is not effective in improving a patient’s psychological condition. Despite the lack of substantial research, it is still legal for physicians to prescribe Zoloft for teens who suffer from a variety of psychological ailments.
On October 15, 2004, the FDA made a public announcement that would drastically change the way that Zoloft for teens is prescribed. The FDA’s action was prompted by the results of a study conducted by top researchers at Columbia University. This study found that Zoloft for teens and children correlates with a two to three percent increase in the prevalence of suicidal or aggressive thoughts and behaviors in these patient populations.
In response to the dangers of Zoloft for teens, the FDA ordered that the drug’s maker, Pfizer, add a “black box warning” to all Zoloft product information to warn patients and physicians that Zoloft can increase suicidal and aggressive tendencies in pediatric patients. The warning also advises doctors to closely monitor their pediatric patients for any signs of, “clinical worsening, suicidality, or unusual behaviors.”
The FDA’s order of a “black box” warning is the government agency’s strongest action next to pulling a potentially dangerous drug off the market. FDA officials are stating that doctors should exercise extreme care and caution when prescribing Zoloft for teens. This FDA action comes after weeks of expert recommendations for stricter safety warnings and the possible lack of efficacy regarding Zoloft for teens.
The FDA’s warning about Zoloft for teens has caused a ten percent decrease in new prescription sales of this medication in pediatric patient populations. Pediatric patients who are currently taking Zoloft should be carefully monitored for any signs of physical or psychological changes. If you are concerned about the dangers of Zoloft for teens, you may wish to speak to your doctor.
