Zoloft generated $3.1 billion in sales in 2003 alone. The popular antidepressant pill belongs to a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which have been receiving negative press and been the source of several multiple congressional investigations. The FDA has been criticized for sitting on two internal reports finding Zoloft and other SSRI drugs can cause increased risk of suicide among children, as well as putting babies at risk if mothers use the antidepressant drugs while pregnant.

As with any medication, Zoloft overdose can have serious and deadly results. If a Zoloft overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention should be sought. Some indicators that a Zoloft overdose is being suffered may include symptoms like agitation, dizziness, nausea, drowsiness, rapid heartbeat, tremor, vomiting and other effects. Though these symptoms do not automatically mean Zoloft overdose is being suffered, drug toxicity can be extremely serious if not treated, so it is better to err on the side of caution. Other more serious symptoms that may indicate Zoloft overdose can include fainting, convulsions, delirium, hallucinations, mania, high/low blood pressure, slow heartbeat and coma.

In July 2004, Zoloft was the target of another civil action involving an SSRI drug. Lawmakers have been looking at the link between suicide and medications like Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac and other antidepressants, but that has not slowed down the number of lawsuits filed. Zoloft maker Pfizer has continued to claim that its drug is both safe and effective. Pfizer''s stance has been and continues to be challenged.

The most recent Zoloft civil suit filed alleges Pfizer misled physicians and the public regarding Zoloft''s safety and efficacy, most notably in regard to suicidality and withdrawal symptoms caused by Zoloft. The lawsuit alleges the suppression of truth has exposed thousands of people to harm and fraud. The question of safety has been most recently focused on children, with two FDA internal findings being withheld until the drug agency can conduct its September 2004 scheduled meeting, which would be nine months after British authorities already warned physicians not to prescribe Zoloft, Paxil and other antidepressants to children and over a year after initial concerns surfaced.

Since the levels of drugs taken by children, adults and elders can range drastically in potency, the effects of antidepressants on children being debated may have a lot of relevancy in terms of Zoloft overdose. If suicidality is increased while using an antidepressant like Zoloft, the potential for Zoloft overdoses may also increase. As Zoloft lawsuits play out and the FDA decides its official stance on the safety of antidepressants, many are awaiting the outcome of the controversial subject.
