The antidepressant Zoloft®, the brand name of the drug Sertraline hydrochloride, belongs to the class of drugs called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors or "SSRIs." Like other SSRIs there are a number of side effects and symptoms associated with its use, including the threat that it causes birth defects if a woman takes Zoloft® during pregnancy.
More about Zoloft Birth Defects ».
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has placed Zoloft® in its Pregnancy Category C class of drugs. Placement in this class means that the drug has not been effectively studied in pregnant women (likely due to moral issues of testing a drug on a pregnant woman), but animal reproduction studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus and the mother when given Zoloft®.
The types of birth defects associated with Zoloft® and pregnancy are known to be those that are found in other SSRI's:
Women who are breast feeding, pregnant or may become pregnant should consult with their doctor to determine if the benefits of taking Zoloft® outweigh the risks of these types of birth defects, as well as the common side effects that SSRIs can cause.
How birth defects result from taking Zoloft® during pregnancy is not known. The types of heart defects vary widely. Reports include children being born with one or more holes in the heart and several severe congenital defects that require one or more surgeries to correct, if correction is at all possible. The Zoloft® birth defects can also lead to sudden baby death.
It may not be readily apparent at birth that the baby has been born with a Zoloft® birth defect. It may take one or more frightening symptoms before parents and doctors can pinpoint the type of birth defect. Symptoms can include:
