Infants whose mothers take Zoloft® or other antidepressants while pregnant are at risk of Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). If your baby suffers from NAS, contact a Zoloft birth defects lawyer today for help.
Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is a group of problems that occur in newborns that became physically dependent on drugs while in the mother's womb – drugs such as depression medications. Withdrawal from antidepressants, such as Zoloft®, can be unbearable for adults, but is especially tragic when it occurs in a newborn infant who was exposed to Zoloft® in pregnancy.
Symptoms of neonatal abstinence syndrome can begin within one day and as late as ten days after birth. Symptoms of NAS include:
Because other birth issues can cause many of these symptoms, diagnosis must be made after careful examination and tests that include a toxicological (chemical) exam. The severity and type of symptoms suffered will dictate what treatment the Zoloft® side effects require.
The Zoloft® drug is a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor or "SSRI". SSRI's are classified by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Pregnancy Category C. Placement in this class means that the drug has not been effectively studied in pregnant women, but animal reproduction studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus and the mother when given Zoloft®.
Like other SSRI depression medications there is a number birth issues associated with taking the Zoloft® depression medication in pregnancy, NAS is just one of them.
Other birth defects connected to Zoloft® include:
Women who are breast feeding, pregnant or may become pregnant should consult with their doctor to determine if the benefits of taking Zoloft® outweigh the risks of these types of birth defects, as well as the common side effects that SSRIs can cause.
If you have taken the drug Zoloft® or any SSRI before or during pregnancy and your child suffered from neonatal abstinence syndrome, heart defects or other birth defects, a Zoloft® birth defect lawyer can advise you on your rights to compensation.
