Zimmer Durom Cup lawsuits continue to mount as more and more patients complain of severe pain following hip replacement surgery. The Zimmer Durom Cup is the socket component of an artificial hip. A defect in the device may result in an inability to adhere to the hip socket causing the hip to fail and the patient to suffer unbearable pain.
Hip replacement is necessary when the pain from arthritis in the hips causes limited mobility or if a traumatic injury causes the joint to stop working properly. A hip replacement allows the patient to walk and use the joint normally, without pain.
As you may remember from the song you learned in elementary school, “the thighbone’s connected to the hipbone.” The thighbone is called the femur and the hipbone is actually a socket. The full hip replacement consists of three parts:
While this procedure is pretty straightforward and reliable, a failed Zimmer Durom Cup can cause severe pain and complications for a patient. To reverse the effects, the patient will likely have to undergo a revision hip replacement. Between hip failure due to the defective cup and the revision surgery, most patients will be temporarily debilitated.
When the Zimmer Durom Cup hit the market in 2006, surgeons implanted it into their patients because the product promised to give the patients more mobility and a better range of motion. As patients began to complain of pain soon after the hip replacement surgery, doctors noticed that the cup wasn’t adhering to the bone of the hip socket.
Surgeons reported this problem to the manufacturer, Zimmer, Inc. who ceased to sell the product. Zimmer, Inc. issued a Zimmer Durom Cup recall in July 2008. However, any patients who underwent hip replacement surgery prior to then are at risk of suffering an injury from a recalled device. Approximately one in every 20 patients who receive a Zimmer Durom Cup will suffer from sever pain.
If your or a loved one have suffered limited mobility and pain due to the Zimmer Durom Cup, it is important to contact a lawyer experienced in handling cases involving medical device failures. You may be entitled to recover compensation for your losses.
