Zimmer Durom Cup Hip Implant

The Zimmer Durom cup is a brand of the metal cup implant that goes into the hip socket. When it first came on the market in 2006, it was touted as an innovative product that allowed the replacement patients more stability and a wider range of motion post-surgery. Doctors began to implant their patients with this device, confident in its effectiveness.

Over 12,000 patients were implanted with the Zimmer Durom cup. However, after several patients reported to experience chronic pain following surgery, doctors began to notice a problem with the device. Instead of easily affixing into place in the socket, the Durom cup began to break loose causing intense pain and drastically reducing their range of motion. The patients had to undergo additional surgery to remove the cup and replace it with a more reputable and stable brand.
