The Zimmer Durom Acetabular Cup (Durom Cup) is a replacement component that has been used in over 12,000 replacement surgeries. Manufactured by Zimmer Holdings, the largest orthopedic parts manufacturer in the U.S., the Zimmer Durom Cup has been linked to several injuries caused by the devices failure to work.
According to reports, patients who received a Durom Cup experienced a high failure rate, caused by the Durom Acetabular Cup’s inability to bond with the host bone. Patients whose Durom Cup failed to work properly complained of severe pain and would eventually have to undergo replacement surgery. The device has been known to fail in as little as three months after surgery.
Failure of the medical device became public knowledge in 2008 when a renowned orthopedic surgeon in Los Angeles, California warned surgeons across the U.S. that his patients were experiencing a high failure rate. Dr. Lawrence Dorr told other orthopedic surgeons that his patients were experiencing high levels of pain following surgery.
Zimmer temporarily suspended sales of the faulty device months after initial complaints about the device. Despite knowing of the potential dangers, the company allowed more than 12,000 patients to receive the device. Injury attorneys everywhere are now investigating plaintiff’s injury claims, alleging that Zimmer failed to adequately disclose the potential risks and necessary surgical techniques.
If you’ve received a Zimmer Durom Acetabular Cup and are experiencing pain, you should visit your doctor immediately to determine whether your replacement is working properly. If not, the next most important thing to do is contact an attorney who handles defective products. You will likely have a legal claim against Zimmer and will most likely qualify to seek a settlement for your injuries and losses.
