Hip Replacement Surgery

Hip replacement surgery is a common procedure to alleviate pain from arthritis or to help heal a hip fracture. The surgery involves the implantation of artificial hip components into the hip socket to reinforce and stabilize the area, allowing the patient a wider range of motion that he had prior to surgery.

A brand of acetabular component, the Zimmer Durom Cup, manufactured by the Zimmer, Inc. is intended to foster a more conservative procedure, as less bone has to be removed before it is implanted. The device has been manufactured with a promise to provide patients greater stability and a wider range of motion — two important concerns for patients undergoing this type of reconstructive surgery.

Problems With the Zimmer Durom Cup

The product went on the market in the United States in 2006. Unfortunately, after being implanted in 12,500 patients, many started to realize that the device they had such hope in, began to fail. Physicians and orthopedic surgeons began to notice the increased failure rate and sought to find out why this was happening. The cup did not bond to the bone in some patients, leaving the person in more intense pain than they started with, not to mention a reduced range of motion.

Medical professionals began to complain to the company, including a well-known hip surgeon, Dr. Larry Dorr. In the meantime, countless patients have had to have revision surgery to remove and replace the defective cup.

In May 2008, after dismissing the original reports made by Dr. Dorr, Zimmer investigated the Durom Cup. After concluding that more extensive training should be given to doctors before installing these devices, Zimmer suspended all sales of the artificial hip in July 2008. A recall was not instituted.
