Four separate lawsuits have been filed alleging the use of Zicam zinc spray has caused a loss of smell called anosmia. Zicam is an over the counter homeopathic cold medicine that claims to reduce the duration and symptoms of the common cold. Anosmia reports have been made in conjunction with the use of Zicam Cold Remedy in the nasal gel or swabs, which are applied directly to nose.
Reports of a loss of smell have also been made with another popular zinc spray, but the majority of consumer complaints have been with Zicam. A loss of smell can be a permanent condition and can have deadly consequences. Many people underestimate the importance of olfactory senses, but for the consumers that have experienced a loss of smell, the effects have been life altering.
A loss of smell can affect the ability to taste and the pleasure of eating is often lost. Most of what is described as "taste" consists of smells and the loss of smell can result in all foods tasting like undistinguishable mush. In addition, olfactory signals help set off warning signals when danger or a threat is present. The loss of smell will not allow a person to smell things that set off cues that something is not right, including smoke or gas leaks. Even things such as smelling rotten or spoiled food and beverages will be lost, leading to adverse health effects.
Reports show that consumers have suffered the loss of smell after using Zicam according to labeling directions and have even occurred after a one-time use. The American Rhinologic Society discussed several cases of Zicam use and the loss of smell in a September 2003 meeting. Loss of smell affects around 2 million people in the U.S. The consumer complaints surrounding the use of Zicam the loss of smell have included permanent and lasting conditions.
The FDA is currently investigating the consumer complaints that Zicam was the cause for the loss of smell. An FDA hot line is taking reports of any more consumers that think they have a loss of smell due to Zicam use. Matrixx has said that, "statements alleging that intranasal Zicam products cause anosmia (loss of smell) are completely unfounded and misleading," and have reaffirmed Zicam''s safety.
A Zicam consultant and well-known nose expert from the University of Pennsylvania thinks that an absence of scientific evidence on Zicam and loss of smell exists and further studies are needed for him to have a scientific opinion.
