Following several reports of Zicam side effects, the decongestant was pulled from the U.S. market in June 2009. Made by Matrixx Initiatives, Inc., Zicam is a decongestant medication that may be used to treat:

• allergy attacks
• hay fever
• sinus infections
• the common cold

Zicam comes in the form of a nasal spray, a nasal swab or a nasal gel.

Although Zicam Cold Remedy can be an effective decongestant, the FDA has received hundreds of patient reports regarding the development of severe Zicam side effects since 1999.

Consequently, on June 16, 2009, the FDA issued a nationwide recall of three Zicam products, including:

• Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel
• Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs
• Zicam Kids' Size

The FDA also warned the public to avoid using other Zicam products until their safety has been fully evaluated.

Severe Zicam Side Effects: Anosmia

Of possible Zicam side effects, anosmia – the loss of smell – is (to date) the most severe known complication associated with using this medication.

Anosmia can manifest as:

• Specific anosmia, in which the ability to detect a particular odor is impaired (i.e. an individual won't be able to smell coffee or vanilla)
• General anosmia, in which the ability to detect all odors is affected

Because the sense of smell is linked to both taste and memory, anosmia can dramatically impair an individual's quality of life.

In many cases, anosmia is permanent, and affected patients will need rehabilitation to:

• modify their diets
• detect the presence of harmful gases or toxins
• deal with the emotional distress of losing their sense of smell

Mild Zicam Side Effects

In most cases, users of Zicam Cold Remedy will only experience mild side effects upon taking this medication. Milder Zicam side effects may also include:

• burning of the nasal passages
• diarrhea
• headaches
• nausea

However, should Zicam users start to develop any of the following symptoms, they should immediately discontinue use of Zicam and seek medical attention, as these health complications can indicate the development of severe Zicam side effects:

• difficulty breathing
• increased heart rate
• seizures
• swelling of the tongue, lips or face (an indication of severe allergic reaction to Zicam)
• unusual behavior or hallucinations

Zicam Side Effects: Drug Interactions

Some drugs are known to cause health complications when taken along with Zicam. Brand names of drugs known to negatively interact with Zicam include (but aren't limited to):

• Furoxone
• Ismelin
• Parlodel
• Stelazine
• Thorazine

Use of caffeine when taking Zicam may also raise the risk of experiencing Zicam side effects.
