Pharmaceutical giant Novartis agreed to stop selling its irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) drug Zelnorm in May 2007, two months after the drug was recalled from the U.S. market. The March recall was prompted by the results of an extensive analysis submitted to the Food and Drug Administration by the drug's maker. According to the analysis, Zelnorm increased the risk of cardiovascular and gastrointestinal problems in patients being treated with the drug.
