Yaz Warnings

Yaz birth control has been linked to several severe side effects. Because of its potential dangers, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued alerts to warn consumers of its potential dangers.

Yaz Warning Letter

To date, Yaz has been issued two FDA warnings:

In October 2008, the FDA mandated that Bayer Healthcare provide clearer advertising and product information about the limits and side effects of Yaz, as the company had been seriously downplaying the severe side effects of Yaz while also overstating its uses.

In September 2009, the FDA issued Bayer a citation because the company had been suspected of distributing potentially poor quality batches of Yaz Birth Control.

Is Yaz Safe?

Most women can safely use Yaz as an effective birth control pill. The most common Yaz side effects include headaches, changes in menstruation and breast tenderness. Unfortunately, however, Yaz has been reported to cause some rare but serious side effects, including:

adrenal insufficiency
blood clots and deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
breast, cervical or uterine cancer
depression
gallbladder disease
heart attack
kidney problems
liver disease or failure
stroke
severe allergic reaction

Who Is At Risk?

Women with the highest risk of developing such harmful Yaz side effects include those who are older than 35 and/or have a history of:

blood clots
heart attack
heart disease
high cholesterol
hypertension
low estrogen levels
metabolic syndrome, a condition characterized by excessive abdominal fat and high blood sugar
pulmonary embolism
stroke
smoking
