Yaz Birth Control Symptoms

Produced by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Yaz is a drospirenone contraceptive medication that is FDA approved for the treatment of moderate acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Bayer HealthCare also distributes another drospirenone-based birth control pill known as Yasmin. People commonly mistake the two birth control pills for being the same thing, however, they have a slightly different make up.

Yasmin, (generic: Ocella) FDA approved in 2001, contains 3mg drospirenone and 30mcg ethinyl estradiol, a bioactive hormone in most birth control pills.

Yaz, FDA approved in 2006, also contains 3mg drospirenone and 20mcg ethinyl estradiol.

Yaz and Yasmin claim to be 99.9 percent effective at preventing pregnancy when taken properly.

Yaz Medical Issues

Yaz, like most other birth control pills, has been linked to common side effects, which include:

bloating
breast pain
changes in menstruation and/or spotting between cycles
darkening of facial skin
freckling
increased hair growth
loss of scalp hair
problems with contact lenses
vaginal itching and/or discharge

Severe Problems with Yaz

In more rare cases, Yaz has been reported to cause a number of serious side effects, including:

adrenal insufficiency
blood clots and deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
breast, cervical or uterine cancer
depression
gallbladder disease
heart attack
kidney problems
liver disease or failure
stroke
severe allergic reaction

Should women taking Yaz start experiencing breathing problems, chest pain, paralysis, or another unusual symptom, they should seek immediate medical attention to prevent potentially fatal complications.

Treatment for Yaz Symptoms

Yaz patients who develop minor side effects, such as bloating, will likely not need to seek treatment for Yaz side effects. However, should these side effects persist or significantly interfere with a woman's life, she should work with her doctor to find an alternative contraception medication.

Women who develop severe Yaz side effects will likely need some combination of:

surgery
prescription medication
physical therapy
assistive devices, such as electric wheelchairs and voice-activated computer programs
therapy to treat the emotional effects of having permanent disabilities
