Yaz Birth Control: Pulmonary Embolism

Yaz birth control increases the risk of pulmonary embolism, the medical condition in which an artery in the lung (part of the body's pulmonary system) is blocked so the blood can't get through to the lung. All combined-hormone contraceptives (including Yaz birth control pills) increase a woman's likelihood of suffering a pulmonary embolism, particularly if she uses the contraceptive and:

smokes
is over 35
has a family or personal history of pulmonary embolism

Yaz Pulmonary Embolism Risk Is Based on the Blood Clot Risk

The makers of Yaz birth control, Bayer Corp., are aware of the pulmonary embolism risk associated with Yaz side effects. The estrogen in combined-hormone contraceptives such as Yaz and in other hormonal treatments increases the risk of blood clot formation. Blood clots are the most frequent cause of pulmonary embolisms; a pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot in the body breaks free from the site where it formed and travels to a lung.

While most blood clots form in one of the legs, they can also form in an arm, in the heart, or even an eye.

In both the Yaz packaging and the Yaz website, the following warning is presented:

Women, especially those 35 and over, are strongly advised not to smoke because it increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects including Yaz blood clots, stroke, and yaz heart attacks.

Although a pulmonary embolism isn't necessarily fatal, it's one of the most frequent causes of in-hospital death.

The Symptoms of a Pulmonary Embolism

The symptoms of pulmonary embolism can vary significantly, depending on many factors such as a woman's underlying health, the size of the clot and how much of the lung is involved. a cough that produces bloody sputum
chest pain — anywhere in the chest and perhaps radiating to the neck, jaw, shoulder or arm. The pain could be aching, dull, or sharp and stabbing. It might get worse with movement or when coughing or breathing
a rapid heartbeat
sudden shortness of breath, whether active or at rest

A woman having a pulmonary embolism may also experience:

anxiety
clammy or bluish-colored skin
excessive sweating
fever
leg swelling
lightheadedness or fainting
weak pulse
wheezing

Outcome of a Pulmonary Embolism

About a third of the individuals who experience an undiagnosed and untreated pulmonary embolism don't survive. Those who do may suffer pulmonary hypertension or heart damage.
