Yaz & Pregnancy

Up to 99.9 percent effective at preventing pregnancy, Yaz is a prescription birth control pill that may also be used to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD, a severe form of PMS), as well as moderate acne. Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals produced Yaz along with another drospirenone contraception called Yasmin. Ocella is the generic of Yasmin.

Pregnancy When Taking Yaz: Some Women Got Pregnant on Yaz

Women taking Yaz who don't take the pill daily, within two hours before or two hours after the same time each day, will not have 99.9 percent protection from getting pregnant. If women skip one pill, they:

Should take the skipped pill as soon as they remember (If they remember the following day at the same time, they should take the skipped pill at the correct time and then take the following pill about 8 hours later
Will still be protected from getting pregnant, however they will have a 2 percent chance of getting pregnant (rather than a 0.1 percent chance)

Should women skip two or more pills, they should find an alternative form of contraception and start the next cycle of Yaz birth control pills immediately following their next menstrual cycle.

Yaz Side Effects

As with any form of birth control pill, women may experience mild side effects from yaz, including breast tenderness, weight gain or breakthrough bleeding. The side effects of concern are the more yaz severe side effects, which may include:

adrenal insufficiency
blood clots and deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
breast, cervical or uterine cancer
depression
gallbladder disease
heart attack
kidney problems
liver disease or failure
stroke
severe allergic reaction

Am I At Risk?

Those who are most likely to develop these side effects include women over 35 years old, those who smoke, as well as those with a history of:

blood clots
heart attack
heart disease
high cholesterol
hypertension
low estrogen levels
metabolic syndrome, a condition characterized by excessive abdominal fat and high blood sugar
pulmonary embolism
stroke
smoking
