Yaz birth control may affect potassium levels more than other birth control pills do. The form of progestin used in Yaz is different from the progestins used in most other oral contraceptives (OCs). Yaz birth control pill uses the synthetic progestin known as drospirenone (drsp®), and it is the drospirenone that may significantly increase a woman's potassium levels.

Arrhythmias, Other Cardiac Events, and Yaz

Potassium is a crucial nutrient for the human body. The recommended daily allowance of potassium is about 4,000 milligrams. However, too much potassium in the body (hyperkalemia) can be quite dangerous. If Yaz pills induce a too-high potassium level in a woman, she may develop:

• heart arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat), which can be fatal
• cardiac arrest (the heart stops beating) — also potentially fatal
• changes in nerve and/or muscle (neuromuscular) control (potassium is necessary for nerve and muscle function)

Hyperkalemia can be caused by many medications, especially those that alter the kidneys' function — because it is the kidneys that measure the potassium in the blood, removing excess amounts of potassium when necessary. If the kidneys are affected by a medication such as Yaz, they may not be able to filter excess potassium out of the body.

Yaz and Potassium Level Warnings

The labeling and website for Yaz birth control mention potassium levels repeatedly. Bayer Corp., the giant pharmaceutical company that markets Yaz, is required to let women know that taking Yaz birth control may result in increased potassium levels. Their warnings include the following:

"You should not take Yaz if you have kidney, liver, or adrenal disease because this could cause serious heart and health problems...Women who take certain drugs (See Below) should have their potassium levels checked in the first month of taking YAZ."

Bayer goes on to note that some of the drugs that may increase potassium and interact with Yaz side effects are:

• NSAIDs such as ibuprofen (e.g., Motrin, Advil)
• naproxen (e.g., Naprosyn, Aleve) when used long-term
• Potassium-sparing diuretics (spironolactone and others) — the drsp in Yaz is an analog of spironolactone
• Potassium supplementation
• ACE inhibitors (e.g., Vasotec, Capoten, Zestril)
• angiotensin-II receptor antagonists (e.g., Diovan, Cozaar, Avapro)
• aldosterone antagonists
• heparin

Yaz and Thrombotic Events

As Bayer Corp. takes pains to note, the use of any oral contraceptive is associated with an increased risk of including venous and arterial thrombotic events (i.e., when a clot of coagulated blood attaches to the inside of a vein or artery). Yaz use provides an increased risk of thrombosis, as noted in the Yaz prescribing information.

Symptoms of Too-High Potassium

A too-high serum level of potassium may produce no symptoms, or it may result in one or more of the following:

• irregular heartbeat
• nausea
• slow, weak, or absent pulse/heartbeat
• change in breathing pattern
• weakness
• loss of consciousness
