Yaz is an oral contraceptive that claims to be 99.9 percent effective at preventing pregnancy when taken within 4 hours of the same time every day. Yaz is generically known as drospirenone and is produced by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals. Unlike other oral contraceptives, Yaz has a 24/4 pill cycle, in which the first 24 pills are active with drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol (a bio-active estrogen in most oral contraceptives). The final 4 pills are placebos during which a woman will menstruate.
Other formulations of drospirenone birth control pills include Yasmin and its generic, Ocella. The only difference between Yaz and Yasmin is the amount of ethinyl estradiol each contains.
In addition to its contraceptive use, Yaz may also be prescribed in the treatment of moderate acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a more severe form of PMS.
For most women, Yaz is an effective contraceptive that will only cause minor side effects, such as bloating, breast tenderness and changes in menstruation. In rare cases, however, women may develop severe, potentially fatal Yaz side effects. Yaz may be dangerous to take if women have a history of:
For these high-risk women, Yaz will likely be unsafe to take. Consequently, they should work with their doctor to find a suitable, safe alternative method of birth control.
Rare but severe Yaz side effects may include:
It's crucial that Yaz patients are aware of the symptoms of the above side effects so they know when to seek emergency medical care. In most cases, these side effects can result in death if left untreated.
