Produced by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Yaz is an oral contraceptive pill that, when taken as directed, is over 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy. In addition to being an extremely effective form of birth control, Yaz may also be prescribed in the treatment of moderate acne (in females over 14) and/or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). PMDD is a severe form of PMS that causes severe mood swings, depression, bloating and/or headaches.
Yaz is generically known as drospirenone. Yasmin, known generically as Ocella, is also produced by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals. These birth control pills are the only contraceptives to contain the progestin component drospirenone (DRSP). And, although they have a slightly different composition, both Yaz and Yasmin have been linked to serious health risks, the worst of which can be fatal.
