Yaz Birth Control Menstrual Clotting

Yaz birth control pills can induce menstrual clotting, which may be a cause for alarm. Menstrual clotting happens when blood pools in a woman's uterus. Although the clotting may be a normal phenomenon as the body tries to control its bleeding, in other cases the clots are a reason to seek medical attention.

Clotting During Heavy Periods from Yaz

For example, during an extra-heavy menstrual period — perhaps caused by Yaz birth control use — there is more menstrual blood exiting the body than normal. A woman's body usually releases its own anticoagulants to keep menstrual blood from clotting, so that if flows easily, but when there's too much blood for the anticoagulants to handle, one or more clots may form.

The menstrual clotting forms from thickened or dense blood in the uterus. The clots are often darker in color than the rest of the menstrual blood, too. Multiple clots in the menstrual blood can make the blood seem thicker than usual. If a woman has an uncomfortable amount of menstrual blood clots or any single clot that is larger than the size of a quarter, she should see her doctor about it.

Other Causes of Menstrual Clotting

There are other reasons why a woman may observe clots in her menstrual blood, but the one that is linked to the use of Yaz birth control pills is hormonal changes. Each woman's body has natural hormones — including estrogen and progesterone, the hormones that regulate the production, thickening and shedding of the lining of the uterus (in other words, the main aspect of the menstrual cycle).

When the balance of estrogen and progesterone is manipulated as it is with Yaz, other combined-hormone contraceptives and other hormonal therapies, the lining of the uterus may become excessively thick, resulting in more menstrual bleeding than normal. When the dense lining sheds it can cause menstrual clotting.

When to See Your Doctor

A woman taking Yaz who observes severe clotting or large clots should see her OB/Gyn or primary-care doctor about it. Other menstrual clotting-related signs and symptoms that merit a visit to a physician are:

irregular periods, or frequent bleeding in between periods
unexplained fatigue
lightheadedness
anemia
pale skin
fingernail beds that are pale, not pink

Medical Tests for Menstrual Clotting Problems

A physician may conduct several types of tests to identify the cause of the clotting. Such tests may include:

biopsy —a small tissue sample is taken from the uterine lining for analysis
blood work — to check for anemia and to determine whether the blood has adequate clotting agents
dilatation and curettage — a bit of the uterine lining is scraped away for analysis
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) — to check for growths such as fibroids or other problems
vaginal ultrasound — to take an ultrasound image of the inside of the vagina and uterus
