Yaz & Gallbladder Disease

Produced by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Yaz is an oral contraceptive medication that, when taken within four hours of the same time daily, claims to be 99.9 percent effective at preventing pregnancy. Yaz is generically known as drispirenone and may also be prescribed in the treatment of moderate acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a severe form of PMS.

Bayer Healthcare also produces another drispirenone birth control pill known as Yasmin. The only difference between Yaz and Yasmin is that Yasmin contains 10mcg more of ethinyl estradiol, a bioactive form of estrogen used in most oral contraceptives. Yasmin was FDA approved in 2001, and Yaz received its FDA approval in 2006.

Gallbladder Disease and Other Yaz Complications

Despite its effectiveness, Yaz birth control has been reported to cause a range of serious, potentially life threatening side effects, including blood clots, heart attack and gallbladder disease. To minimize the risk of sustaining such severe Yaz complications, it's vital that women:

Symptoms of Yaz Gallbladder Problems

Gallbladder disease can have two different manifestations:

Cholecystitis , gallbladder inflammation due to excessive levels of estrogen in the blood. This form of gallbladder disease impairs the gallbladder's ability to transport bile from the liver to the intestines (a key part of the digestive process).
Choledocholithiasis (or cholelithiasis), gallstones within the gallbladder that impede the flow of bile through the liver's bile ducts. About 90 percent of choledocholithiasis patients experience no symptoms. Such asymptomatic cases are generally not threatening to a patient's health.

Both of these conditions may be accompanied by symptoms such as:

abdominal pain, particularly in the upper or middle torso (The pain may be fleeting, may spread to the back or below the shoulder blade, and may intensify after eating.)
feeling of fullness
fever
jaundice
nausea
vomiting

Gallbladder Disease Treatments
