Yaz & The FDA

Is Yaz FDA Approved?

Yes: Yaz was FDA approved in 2006. In addition to being an FDA-approved contraceptive, Yaz is also approved for treating moderate acne in females older than 14 and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a severe form of PMS marked by depression, anxiety and sleeping problems.

Yaz FDA Warnings

The FDA has issued to Yaz warnings:

In October 2008, the FDA sent a warning letter to Bayer HealthCare stating that the pharmaceutical company was grossly understating the drug's side effects while overstating its uses (i.e. alluding that Yaz could treat PMS). The FDA ordered Bayer to provide clearer, more accurate information regarding the risks, side effects and uses of Yaz.

In September 2009, the FDA cited Bayer Healthcare for distributing possibly poor quality batches of Yaz. Bayer responded that it performed quality control by examining the average quality of all shipments, rather than the quality of each batch.

Interestingly, in October 2008, Bayer Healthcare announced that it was facing 129 lawsuits regarding the side effects of Yaz and Yasmin. Since then, as more and more women have become aware of and been diagnosed with Yaz side effects, the number of Yaz lawsuits filed has risen significantly.
