Yaz Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Yaz birth control pills have been found to cause some rare but serious side effects, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT). DVT is a condition in which blood clots lodge in the body's deep veins, particularly those in the legs.

DVT Symptoms

About 50 percent of all DVT patients don't experience any symptoms of the condition. However, when symptoms are present, they may include:

inflammation in the affected leg, ankle and/or foot
pain, often described as cramping
redness and/or warmth in the affected area

Yaz patients who develop any of the above symptoms should seek immediate medical attention to prevent potentially fatal complications. If left untreated, blood clots can break free and cause patients to develop the following life-threatening conditions:

heart attack
pulmonary embolism, blood clots in the lungs that obstruct breathing
stroke

Risk Factors for DVT

Women with the highest risk of developing DVT while taking Yaz include those with a history of:

blood clots
heart attack
heart disease
high cholesterol
hypertension
low estrogen levels
metabolic syndrome, a condition characterized by excessive abdominal fat and high blood sugar
pulmonary embolism
stroke
smoking

It's important that women discuss their complete medical history with their doctor before starting a course of Yaz Birth Control. High-risk patients may need to consider an alternative contraceptive.

DVT Treatments & Yaz Lawsuits

Treatment for deep vein thrombosis involves minimizing the size of existing clots while preventing new clots from forming. DVT treatment may include:

anticoagulant (blood thinning) medications
clot-busting medications
implantation of a filter in the vena cava (a large abdominal vein) – This filter can prevent blood clots from making their way to the heart, lungs or brain
compression stockings to prevent swelling and stimulate healthy blood flow
