Yaz Birth Control Deaths

Yaz-related deaths are based on this contraceptive's increased risk of potentially fatal medical conditions including:

heart attack (a blood vessel in the heart is blocked)
pulmonary embolism (an artery in the lung is blocked)
stroke (a rupture or blockage of a blood vessel in the brain)
blood clots
kidney failure

All of these events require emergency medical care and can cause death or very serious disability. The Prescribing Information supplied with Yaz by its manufacturer, Baxter Healthcare, includes extensive warnings about who should not use Yaz, in light of the many potential side effects that can result in death.

What is Yaz?

Yaz is a combined-hormone drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use as both a contraceptive and as a treatment for PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder). A death due to Yaz use is a tragic occurrence, and an individual impacted by a Yaz-related death should seek legal counsel.

Yaz, Age and Risk of Death

As the Yaz packaging notes, the use of any type of oral contraceptive is accompanied by increased risks of several types of thrombotic and thromboembolic events (as listed above), plus:

gallbladder disease
hepatic neoplasia (liver cancer)
hypertension (high blood pressure)

These disorders all put a Yaz user at greater risk of death; however, the death rate is higher among older Yaz users. In fact, Baxter Healthcare states that Yaz should not be used by women over 35 who have a significant smoking habit — that is, more than 15 cigarettes per day. Nonsmokers over the age of 40 who use an oral contraceptive such as Yaz also have an increased risk of circulatory disease.

Yaz, Smoking and the Risk of Death

The labeling for Yaz (and similar combined-hormone oral contraceptives) warns that smoking "greatly increases the possibility of suffering heart attacks and strokes" and that "smoking and the use of oral contraceptives greatly increase the chances of developing and dying of heart disease."
