Yaz and Arrhythmia

Yaz birth control has caused arrhythmia (irregular heart beat) in many women. The heart normally beats at a steady rate that is in accord with the level of a person's activity and comfort level (for example, at rest, during light exercise or under extreme stress). An arrhythmia is an abnormality of the heart rate. There are two main types of this condition, both of which have been observed among Yaz users:

Bradycardia: when the heart rate is too slow, less than 60 beats per minute for an awake adult
Tachycardia: when the heart beats far too fast, over 100 beats per minute in an adult

An arrhythmia — whether due to Yaz use or not — may be slight, temporary and without noticeable symptoms, or it may be quite noticeable, severe and long-lasting. An arrhythmia can even be fatal. The details of individual arrhythmia experiences vary quite widely.

Bradycardia

A woman taking Yaz could be experiencing mild bradycardia and not even realize it, especially if she is healthy and fit, with a normal resting heart rate between 50 and 60 beats per minute. However, when the heart rate drops below 50 beats per minute, a woman may not get enough blood pumping to her organs, and she may experience some or all of the following symptoms:

chest pains
confusion
disturbed sleep
dizziness
fatigue
heart palpitations
near-fainting or fainting (syncope)
shortness of breath
weakness

Tachycardia

In some cases, tachycardia (too-rapid heart rate) is harmless, but in many cases it's life-threatening. When a woman's heart is beating abnormally quickly, it may not pump an adequate amount of blood to her organs and tissues. She may then experience some or all of the following:

blacking out
chest pain
dizziness, lightheadedness
heart palpitations — an uncomfortable, irregular or racing heartbeat, or a feeling that the heart is "flopping" in the chest
shortness of breath
vision problems
