A pulmonary embolism (PE) is a blood clot that forms in the deep veins in the body, often the thigh, and flows through the blood stream, through the heart and to the lungs. This is a serious condition that can damage the lungs and other organs, and causes low oxygen levels in the blood.

Yasmin® may cause blood clots and deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which then travel to the lungs where they cause pulmonary embolisms. The medication is a combination oral contraceptive that has been the focus of many lawsuits for its serious, sometimes lethal side effects.

Yasmin® Pulmonary Embolism: Symptoms and Signs

Sudden breathlessness that has no other explanation (such as asthma) is the most significant sign of a pulmonary embolism. Other symptoms can include:

• Sudden chest pain
• Coughing up blood in the phlegm
• A feeling of discomfort, nervousness, and anxiety
• If the clot dissolves, several days later a person might feel exhausted and have a slight fever, but these symptoms subside within about two weeks

Even if the clot disappears or is small, the likelihood of another embolism increases and it is important to see a doctor immediately to get an accurate diagnosis and begin preventive treatment.

If the pulmonary embolism is larger, the signs will include:

• Sudden onset
• Paleness and a cold sweat
• Possible loss of consciousness
• Death without medical care

Treatments for Yasmin® Pulmonary Embolism

When someone is diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism, the key to treatment is to thin the blood with anticoagulants such as heparin and prevent clots from forming in the future. Depending upon the patient’s individual situation, these anticoagulants can be given for a few months or for the rest of someone’s life.

Newer methods of “clot-busting” therapy use fibrinolytic agents to break up the clot. This method of treatment can cause excessive bleeding. The longer a clot is present, the more difficult it is to break up.
