Yasmin® is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) made by Berlex Laboratories, a U.S. affiliate of Schering AG, Germany. It was approved in May 2001 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
It was the first birth control pill to contain drospirenone, a progestin. In addition to drospirenone, the other active ingredient in Yasmin® is ethinylestradiol, a synthetic form of estrogen. Having these two active ingredients makes the drug a COC.
The medication works by changing the normal menstrual cycle. The regular dose of Yasmin® prevents an egg, which usually is released monthly during ovulation, from ripening and being released. It also thickens the mucus at the entrance to the womb, interfering with the sperm’s ability to enter and reach an egg.
In addition, the medication changes the lining of the uterus, making it difficult for an egg to implant itself into the uterine wall.
Yasmin® side effects could result the following conditions in persons with a history of these illnesses:
Blood clots are a particular concern for Yasmin® users. Where they form influences the signs and symptoms of blood clots.
Blood clots in the deep veins of the leg, which can cause deep vein thrombosis, can cause the lower leg to swell, appear red, hurt, or be warm. A heart attack or blood clot in the heart or lungs might cause someone feel chest pain, short of breath, and discomfort in the upper part of the body such as the arms, upper back, neck or jaw.
When a blood clot occurs in the brain, signs and symptoms can include headaches, changes in speech, paralysis, dizziness, trouble speaking or standing. When these symptoms occur as a result of a blood clot in the brain, they suggest someone is having a stroke.
If you or someone you know has taken Yasmin® and then had any of these symptoms or illnesses, you should contact a Yasmin® lawyer. Our Yasmin® attorneys are available to investigate lawsuits on behalf of people who believe they’ve suffered complications as a result of taking the medication.
