Heart Attack While Taking Yasmin®

Studies have confirmed that there is an increased risk of heart attack and coronary artery disease in women taking Yasmin®.

This is especially true for women who smoke, and poses a greater risk for those who are older than 35 years and smoke. The risk of users on the pill getting heart disease increases with age and the amount of smoking. The death rate in women on the pill who are smokers over the age of 35 and nonsmokers over the age of 40 is known to increase.

Other risk factors include:

• High blood pressure
• High cholesterol
• Diabetes
• Morbid obesity
• Age

Research has indicated that using oral contraceptives can exacerbate these conditions, which contribute to heart attack, coronary artery disease and death.

Oral Contraceptives, Cholesterol and Diabetes

Progestogens (hormone-like substances) have been shown to lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL), which is the “good cholesterol” and lead to glucose intolerance, which causes diabetes. Progestogens are used in oral contraceptives, and they should be used with caution in women with heart disease.

Yasmin® Information

Yasmin® contains two synthetic hormones, drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. They are manufactured versions of two naturally produced hormones, estrogen and progesterone. Because the pill contains more than one active ingredient, it is called a combination oral contraceptive.

The contraceptive works by intervening in the natural cycle of menstruation and preventing the sperm from entering the egg or fertilization. The medication makes the body think an egg has already been produced, and thus keeps the egg from maturing and being released during ovulation. It also thickens the cervix, the entrance to the uterus, and keeps sperm out. Finally, it changes the uterine lining to prevent implantation.

This clever bit of biochemistry is a very effective way to prevent pregnancy from occurring. But, the same biochemistry also is also a potential problem for persons with certain diseases and conditions. These include:

• Coronary artery disease
• Diabetes
• High blood pressure
• Certain hormone-dependent cancers
• Heart valve disorders
• Kidney disease
• Liver disease
• Gallbladder disease
• Seizures or epilepsy
• Jaundice
• Depression
