Yasmin®, like other combined oral contraceptives and medications containing estrogen, can cause cholesterol to build up in the gall bladder. The cholesterol then can crystallize, forming small pebbles that can grow into stones in the gall bladder. The size of the crystal can range from as small as a grain of sand to that of a ping-pong or golf ball. If the stones grow too large, they can block the bile duct.
If the gall stones block the duct, then move away, they will cause pain only occasionally. If the blockage remains, however, this situation can be life threatening and requires an operation to remove the gallbladder.
The following might signal that someone is having a gall bladder attack:
Gall stones form more often in women than in men. Women who use hormone replacement therapy or an oral contraceptive such as Yasmin® are at higher risk of having the condition. Persons who lose weight quickly, then regain it have a greater chance of forming gallstones.
Painful gallbladders are usually removed surgically, most often using a laparoscope. The laparoscope allows the surgeon to see the gallbladder as he or she removes it through a small incision. The small size of the incision is less traumatic than regular surgery and allows the patient to leave the hospital sooner.
Drugs are sometimes used to dissolve gallstones, but it may take as long as a couple of years for a stone to dissolve. In addition, it is common for gallstones to occur again.
Another form of therapy uses shock waves, called lithotripsy, to break apart the stones.
Yasmin® is called a combined oral contraceptive, being made from two active ingredients — drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. It prevents pregnancy by stopping the woman’s body from ovulating, tricking it into thinking an egg has been released already. Yasmin® also causes the mucus around the cervix to thicken, diminishing the size of the passage so that sperm cannot go through and enter the uterus. In addition, the drug makes it difficult for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.
If you have taken Yasmin®, then suffered from gallstones and their complications, you may want to contact a Yasmin® lawyer. You may be entitled to compensation for your injuries, pain and suffering. Call a Yasmin® attorney today for more information: (800) 673-5138.
