In some persons, Yasmin® may increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot that forms in a vein deep inside the body. Blood clots happen when the blood thickens and coagulates. This can block the vein, preventing blood flow from that vein, or travel through the bloodstream to another part of the body.
The most serious result of DVT occurs when the blood clot travels from a vein, usually deep in the thigh, through the blood stream to the lungs. A clot that travels is called an embolus. A clot that lodges in an artery to the lungs is a pulmonary embolism, a potentially lethal condition.
Blood clots also can form in veins nearer to the surface of the body. These clots, however, do not break off and become an embolus.
