Wright Hip Resurfacing

Wright Medical Technology is an Arlington, Texas-based manufacturer of hip replacement implants. These hip implants are used in both total hip replacements and hip resurfacing surgery. Wright hip resurfacing systems are led by the Conserve resurfacing system.

What is Hip Resurfacing?

Hip resurfacing is an alternative to total hip replacement that is aimed at more active recipients. It is designed to conserve as much natural bone as possible. This can have several advantages over a total hip replacement, including:

The femoral head and the femoral canal are preserved
In the event a revision surgery is needed, resurfacing revisions tend to be safer and easier
The larger size of the implant ball (of the ball & socket joint) significantly reduces the risk of dislocation
Minimal risk of any leg length discrepancy
Larger range of motion after surgery
There is a greater chance that the recipient will recover their natural gait
Greater chance of being able to resume higher level activities such as playing sports

Risks of Hip Resurfacing

There are several risks associated with a resurfacing system. Infection, dislocation and blood clots are shared risks also involved in total hip replacement. Hip resurfacing carries with it a higher risk of nerve injury and extra bone formation around the hip.

The biggest risk involved in Wright hip resurfacing is the risk to the femoral neck. In total hip replacement the neck becomes metal, but because it is preserved in resurfacing, it is still bone. This bone can be weakened by surgical exposure, preparation of the bone, and the cement used to place implant components. A fracture to the femoral neck creates the need for an immediate revision surgery in which a total hip replacement is required.

In addition to the normal risks associated with any resurfacing system, the Wright hip resurfacing system has had defect problems. In 2004 Wright Medical was forced to recall its Conserve hip resurfacing system due to manufacturing defects, which caused failure. Wright Medical is currently under scrutiny for other possible defects involving hip implants.
