Wright Medical Technology, Inc. is a manufacturer of reconstructive joint devices, such as hip implants. These Wright hip implants are used to replace areas of the hip, which have worn down either through natural use, arthritis, or trauma. In some patients parts of the hip can be saved, which results in a hip resurfacing. Others need total hip replacement.
These hip implants are generally expected to last at least 15 years. There are now lawsuits pending that allege certain Wright Medical Technology, Inc. implants may be defective and dangerous. The Wright hip implant lawsuits claim the defects are causing the system to fail early. When a hip implant fails, it requires revision surgery. It can also lead to more serious medical conditions and permanent injury.
Wright Medical Technology has produced a hip replacement system called the Profemur® Hip System, which features a modular neck. The innovation in the neck is designed to limit the soft-tissue damage because it has the ability to adjust for leg-length differences.
Despite this difference, Wright Medical Technology, Inc. claimed it was very similar to other products on the market, and managed to get the hip implant classified as a 501K product with the FDA. This classification means that the company did not have to test the hip implant extensively.
Recent studies and lawsuits claim there could be serious problems with these implants.
According to recent litigation, the design of the Profemur® Hip System may be flawed. The design flaw allows it to bend and break prematurely, alleges a recent lawsuit filed on behalf of a patient. The bending in the modular neck causes premature wear and corrosion.
The plaintiff in a recent lawsuit claims that his implant broke and caused him permanent injuries. A recent study conducted in Australia says that approximately 11 percent of patients who receive the Profemur® Hip System will require revision surgery because of early failure.
