drug_recall vioxxHailed as a “super pain reliever,” Vioxx was first made available in the U.S. in 1999 and has been prescribed to millions of people to treat arthritis, severe pain, and menstrual problems. On September 30, 2004 Merck voluntarily pulled Vioxx off the market. After internal findings revealed increased cases of heart problems and stroke suffered by Vioxx patients were a direct result of eighteen months of treatment, Merck decided that Vioxx risks outweighed the benefits of continuing to market a potentially unsafe drug.
In 2000, Merck (Vioxx''s manufacturer) initiated a study called APPROVe to research the effects of Vioxx on colon polyps. Eighteen months into the study, it was found that Vioxx users were twice as likely to suffer serious heart problems and strokes as those in the control group. Because of these findings of heart attack and stroke problems, Vioxx was pulled from the market, though there was evidence prior to this study that indicated an elevated risk of serious injury attributed to Vioxx use.
In one study, the FDA found that people who took Vioxx were more likely to suffer heart problems or stroke than people taking Celebrex (Pfizer''s version of this non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) or older arthritis treatments. In another internal study on Vioxx''s gastrointestinal effects, Merck found that with reference to heart attack and stroke Vioxx patients were more likely to have serious health complications compared to people who were taking naproxen, an older arthritis pain relieving medication.
Because of all of this mounting evidence regarding heart complication and stroke , Vioxx is no longer available on the market. Patients are allowed to return unused portions to Merck for a refund. If you are currently taking Vioxx, experts advise you to speak with your doctor about your treatment options as soon as possible. Though it is not likely that you will suffer heart problems or stroke , Vioxx use does increase your risk for these serious adverse health problems. Therefore, it is important to know the signs and symptoms of stroke.
A stroke is a cerebrovascular life-threatening event where the brain does not receive enough oxygen. This occurs because of an interruption to the brain''s blood supply or a blood vessel rupture in or around the brain. The symptoms of a stroke are fairly recognizable and can include the following phenomenon: sudden weakness or numbness, difficulty understanding others or speaking, disorientation, loss of coordination, vision problems, dizziness and trouble walking. If you have experienced any symptoms of stroke , Vioxx may be the cause of your health problems.
If you have suffered adverse consequences related to heart problems or stoke , Vioxx may be the culprit. You may be eligible to seek compensation for your stroke or heart problems.
