Vioxx is a Cox-2 inhibitor, a class of drug that was released on the U.S. market several years ago. This class of drug was to be the next step in treating osteoarthritis and other types of pain. Individuals who had previously taken aspirin or other NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as aspirin or ibuprofen), but were bothered by gastrointestinal problems commonly associated with them.
Vioxx was touted as a great medical development in the many ads that promoted its benefits. Principal among these was the claim that Vioxx relieved pain without causing stomach problems. Unfortunately, Vioxx poses troubling effects for some users. The Food and Drug Administration ordered Merck & Co. to cease promotions aimed at getting doctors to prescribe its arthritis painkiller Vioxx, saying they minimize potential safety risks. The FDA told Merck to set the record straight by sending a "Dear Doctor" letter to all health workers who may have been exposed to the misleading campaign. Merck has until Oct. 1 to respond.
