A Viagra lawsuit is a legal option available to any individual who seeks relief from damages and suffering caused by Viagra use. A Viagra lawsuit was filed in the first week of June 2005 on behalf of a Viagra user in Houston, Texas. Through this Viagra lawsuit, the plaintiff seeks $75,000 in compensatory damages for the loss of his vision as a result of Viagra use. The Viagra lawsuit alleges that Pfizer, the makers of Viagra, failed to warn consumers about the risk of blindness and vision loss caused by their product.
This Viagra lawsuit is one of the first of its kind. Experts believe that the number of Viagra lawsuits will drastically increase in the coming months. The FDA has received at least fifty reports of blindness in Viagra users, and is currently investigating the correlation between Viagra and serious ocular injuries. Pfizer maintains that Viagra use does not increase a patient’s risk of developing ocular diseases citing the results of 103 clinical trials involving 13,000 participants, none of which went blind during their respective studies.
NAION, or nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, is the most common cause of blindness in people over the age of fifty. Of the reported cases of blindness in Viagra users, most have developed this condition during the course of Viagra use. Pfizer and its supporters claim that forty to fifty cases of NAION is to be expected in a patient population reaching over 23 million worldwide. Pfizer representatives state that the risk factors for erectile dysfunction (for which Viagra is prescribed to treat) are the same factors that predispose an individual to ocular conditions like NAION.
Viagra skeptics, including many people who have suffered significant Viagra side effects, argue that Pfizer has underestimated Viagra risks and failed to warn consumers of the most of these potential side effects. The first case of NAION in a Viagra user was discovered in 2000, by a doctor who has subsequently discovered 14 additional cases of vision loss in Viagra users through his own research endeavors. Neither Pfizer nor the FDA has sufficiently addressed these cases prior to June of 2005, though they have had knowledge of these cases for years.
As late as May 2005, medical experts have been urging Pfizer and the FDA to take Viagra ocular side effects more seriously. FDA clinical trials have shown that taking Viagra, especially at higher doses, can lead to significant retinal injury that can last for hours. Pfizer has yet to take seriously the evidence of serious side effects associated with Viagra.
In addition to serious ocular conditions, Viagra can also cause heart and blood pressure problems, seizures, drug interactions, painful and prolonged erection, and more. If you or a loved one has been injured as a result of Viagra use, you may wish contact a Viagra attorney about your eligibility for a Viagra lawsuit. A Viagra lawsuit can help you receive the compensation you deserve for your Viagra related damages and suffering.
Several high profile groups around the country, including the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) based in Los Angeles, CA are calling on Pfizer to remove advertising for Viagra that the groups say promotes unsafe activity.
