drug_recall viagraViagra blindness is a potentially devastating side effect that is currently under investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration. Concerns about Viagra blindness first surfaced with patient reports of developing vision problems, and in some cases complete blindness, after taking Viagra. An ophthalmologist at the University of Minnesota was the first medical expert to report a case of Viagra blindness in a patient in 2000. Since then, the FDA has received more than forty reports of Viagra blindness in men who have taken this prescription impotency drug.
Viagra, manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, was the first erectile dysfunction (ED) drug ever approved for use in the United States. Since the FDA approved Viagra in March 1998, an estimated 23 million men have taken this blockbuster impotency drug. The FDA is currently investigating reports of Viagra blindness in patients and has yet to determine the relationship between Viagra and vision loss.
Civil lawsuits have already been filed by patients who have suffered from Viagra blindness. In the first week of June 2005, a Texas man filed a civil lawsuit against Pfizer in the US District Court of Southern Texas. This individual is seeking approximately $75,000 in compensation for his losses and suffering because of Viagra blindness. He is also requesting class action status so that a lawsuit can be filed on behalf of other men who have suffered Viagra blindness. This civil lawsuit argues that Pfizer has failed to adequately warn consumers about the potential risk of Viagra blindness.
Pfizer has rebutted with facts regarding clinical trial studies which have produced no significant evidence of Viagra blindness. The drug company cites over 100 clinical trials involving 13,000 men who had taken Viagra. Of these clinical trial participants, not one had developed Viagra blindness during the course of treatment. Aside from Viagra blindness, there have been reports of vision problems related to Viagra use, including increased sensitivity to light and changes in the perception of blue/green colors.
Those who refute evidence of Viagra blindness side effects state that some of the underlying causes and conditions related to erectile dysfunction may also predispose an individual to developing serious vision problems. Viagra blindness is caused by a condition called nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, or NAION. NAION causes a restriction in blood flow to the optic nerve which can lead to temporary or permanent vision loss. Viagra blindness appears to be more likely in patients who also have certain risk factors for NAION.
If you or a loved one is currently taking Viagra, you may wish to talk to your health care provider about the risks and benefits of treatment in light of possible Viagra blindness risks. The FDA is still investigating the link between Viagra use and vision problems and is considering label changes to warn of possible Viagra blindness risks. If you or a loved one has taken Viagra and subsequently developed vision problems, you may wish to contact an experienced and highly qualified attorney who can evaluate your Viagra blindness case to determine your legal rights and options.
Several high profile groups around the country, including the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) based in Los Angeles, CA are calling on Pfizer to remove advertising for Viagra that the groups say promotes unsafe activity.
