A Unum class action is a legal step that plaintiffs' lawyers can take to seek damages for clients who have been harmed by Unum's conduct. Unum is a huge insurance company; it has had over $50 billion in assets and operates in many countries. UnumProvident and Unum Group are other names for this company (the named has evolved through many changes).
Unum and its subsidiaries offer insurance products such as:
However glossy and helpful-looking the company's website's are, it's important to know that Unum has repeatedly been accused of engaging in insurance "bad faith" practices such as:
Thousands of lawsuits have been initiated against Unum for these practices. Some of them have been successful; some haven't. Unum class actions are a way to combine many individual lawsuits into single large actions that will be resolved sooner and at less cost to the plaintiffs.
There has also been a federal class action lawsuit against Unum Group, filed by the many investors who contended that the company made several misleading statements to Unum investors in order to artificially inflate its stock price. Unum agreed to a settlement that included the payment of $40 million to investors who bought UnumProvident securities in the years 2000 to 2003.
The first Unum class action suit filed on behalf of individual policyholders was initiated in late 2002 in the Southern District of New York. The case was later transferred to Tennessee, where Unum is based, and in 2007, the lawsuit was finally certified as a class action. Unfortunately, that certification was later reversed on appeal by Unum, which is doing its best to have the class action demolished.
This Unum class action suit has not been resolved; it's still pending. Unum upper-management has tried to destroy internal documents and emails that pertain to the charges of insurance bad faith practices by the company.
If you feel that you have been the victim of an insurance bad faith practice by Unum or one of its subsidiaries, contact a Unum lawyer to discuss your concerns. You may be eligible for financial compensation and other legal remedies.
