Toyota Uncontrolled Acceleration

What is being called "Toyota unintended sudden acceleration" is precisely what is sounds like — some of the popular Toyota and Lexus vehicles made by Toyota have been reportedly accelerating on their own. Customers have reported that their vehicles began accelerating uncontrollably while they were driving; and, while some people reported that they were able to stop the problem, others say they were not so lucky.

Runaway cars, trucks and SUVs have caused multiple accidents, some of which have led to serious injuries and deaths. As the number of customer complaints roll in, the controversy thickens. The issue has gained national attention and has sparked several investigations to determine the cause.

While some researchers argue that there is a problem with the electric throttle system, Toyota maintains there is nothing wrong with its electrical systems. Instead, the automaker argues the problem is rooted in floor mat and sticky pedal issues.

Dealing With Uncontrolled Acceleration Issues

The March 2010 issue of Car and Driver put together some helpful tips for drivers who may experience sudden acceleration problems. Their suggestions are based on tests they allege were conducted at highway speeds and include:

• Hitting the breaks with both feet if necessary; this they say should be able to overpower an engine operating at full throttle
• Shift to neutral or even park if the car is accelerating at full tilt
• Switch the engine to the off position, although be prepared as this may make the vehicle difficult to handle
