In September 2009, all 2005 to 2010 Toyota Tacoma vehicles were recalled by Toyota due to the possibility of sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) accidents with these vehicles. Sudden unintended acceleration is an event in which equipment defects cause Toyota vehicles to immediately speed up without the driver intentionally accelerating.
During the announcement of the recall, Toyota confessed to believe problems with the floor mats and sticky accelerator pedals were the only causes of SUA. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reviewed the approximately 40,000 driver complaints regarding sudden unintended acceleration and reports that, in 80 percent of these claims, drivers say they did not experience any problems with the floor mats and gas pedals.
As a result of NHTSA's findings and the mounting number of acceleration complaints from Toyota vehicle drivers, a number of state and federal agencies are holding investigations to look into whether electronic system failures are also a factor in the accidents.
