The Toyota Motor Corporation has been crippled by recalls it ordered over the last year, warning of faulty parts, including floor mats, accelerators and anti-lock brake software, in many of their popular vehicles. However, the hit to their reputation and pocketbook is nothing compared to the serious and permanent affects that collisions could have on individuals, families and consumers in South Carolina and worldwide.
The first two recalls involve unintended acceleration. When the first accident occurred, the company ordered a recall on certain vehicle models pointing the finger at ill-fitting floor mats that caused the gas pedal to stick. When unintended acceleration occurred in other models, investigations turned up a faulty gas pedal that sticks. The recalls included millions of Toyota vehicles, in and beyond the U.S. Now, even though efforts have been taken to resolve the possible defects, some people still allege sudden acceleration in vehicles that have supposedly been repaired.
So, what is going on? Investigations are underway in an attempt to answer that question. Some believe there is an issue with the electronic throttle system in some of the vehicles. Even though Toyota claims this is not the case, investigations continue.
