Issues with unintentional acceleration in Toyota vehicles have prompted a national recall involving millions of popular cars, trucks and SUVs. Toyota Motor Corp. has been hit hard by problems relating to sudden acceleration in several of the automaker's most popular models.
Toyota has taken action by announcing more than one safety recall. The automaker claims that there are problems with the floor mats and "sticky" pedals, both of which may result in sudden acceleration. The company has issued safety recalls addressing both of these issues.
The first safety recall addresses a safety issue with floor mats that may slip and catch themselves under the gas pedal. When this occurs, the floor mat may obstruct a driver from pressing on the break and controlling the speed of the vehicle.
Vehicles involved in the floor mat entrapment recall include:
Toyota encourages all customers who own a recalled vehicle to take out the removable floor mats until they are able to go to a local Toyota dealership for help. The company's solution to the problem is to reshape the gas pedal to better accommodate removable floor mats.
A second safety recall related to acceleration issues was issued by Toyota Motor Corp. The issue addressed in the pedal recall involves a friction device designed to provide drivers with a feeling of resistance when pressing on the accelerator pedal. Toyota claims that natural wear and tear, over time, may cause the friction device to stick. In an effort to fix what has been referred to as "sticky pedals," Toyota designed a steel reinforcement bar to eliminate excess friction.
The vehicles involved in the pedal recall include:
Toyota urges people who feel they may be affected by sticky pedals to pull over and shut the engine off immediately.
Despite Toyota's efforts to fix the floor mat and sticky pedal issues, some people have reported to think the issue goes beyond these solutions. Investigations are being conducted to determine if the problem is an electrical issue. Toyota denies such claims.
