Sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) is a motor vehicle defect in which the car starts accelerating all of the sudden—without a driver pushing the accelerator and being able to stop the car via the braking system. While a number of auto manufacturers have been reported to have made cars that are affected by SUA, within the past year, Toyota has come under major fire for the prevalence of sudden acceleration in its a number of makes and models of its vehicles, including the Prius, a hybrid vehicle first introduced in the U.S. in 2001.
In September 2009, Toyota issued a massive nationwide recall due to sudden unintended acceleration that affected approximately 10 million of its vehicles in the U.S. Although the company is attempting to fix their vehicles' defects (by paying for rental cars, picking up defective vehicles at owners' homes at no expense, etc.), to date, Toyota has only repaired about 6 percent of the cars affected by the recall.
Among the Toyota cars recalled were 2004 to 2009 Prius, along with:

At the time of the September 2009 Toyota recall, this auto manufacturer had already received about 40,000 complaints regarding sudden unintended acceleration in its vehicles. While Toyota admitted that defects with the car's floor mats and sticky accelerator pedals were responsible for SUA, they have declined to identify electrical problems with the car's software as a valid cause of sudden acceleration.
Interestingly, however, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reported that more than 80 percent of drivers who reported having Toyota sudden acceleration accidents stated that there was no problem with the cars' floor mats or their accelerator pedals.
Regardless of the cause of SUA, it is clear that the results can be devastating; sudden acceleration accidents are said to have caused more than 30 fatalities and hundreds more injuries. Victims of Toyota sudden acceleration accidents may have a viable legal claim, and may be entitled to compensation for their medical bills, property damage, permanent disabilities, lost wages, pain and suffering.
Experts hired by a Minnesota county concluded that a fatal 2006 car crash was not the result of the Toyota sudden acceleration problem.
