At the end of 2009, the Toyota Motor Corporation issued the first of three recalls on several models of their popular vehicles. The first recall surrounded an incorrectly fitted drivers side floor mat that caused the foot pedal to stick. Subsequent recalls were related to a faulty accelerator pedal and faulty hybrid anti-lock brake software. Models that were affected include the Camry, Corolla, Avalon RAV4, Tacoma, Highlander and Prius.
The recalls were sparked by serious and fatal accidents alleging defective parts. Though the company went into overdrive trying to resolve the issues, some argue the real issue has yet to be resolved. Some experts argue there are problems with the electronic throttle system in certain Toyota models. Investigations are underway to determine if there is truth behind such allegations. Toyota Motor Corp. maintains its position that there is not a mechanical issue.
Many victims of accidents in which sudden acceleration is alleged have filed lawsuits against the company to seek compensation for their losses. Even if the accidents do not result in death, they may result in serious injuries that can have a lasting effect on the victim. Under product liability laws, Toyota will be held liable for injuries resulting from defects in its cars.
