The Toyota recall — a series of three separate recalls on the majority of the automakers models from the last decade — is one of the largest in history. Consumers have become wary of the company, once viewed as one of the safest in the business. Several governing bodies, including the U.S. government, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and experts have been investigating the cause of what is being called, Toyota sudden unintended acceleration.
Toyota has recalled millions of vehicles in an effort to resolve the dangerous defect. The first recall concerned incorrect floor mats that caused the gas pedal to stick. Models affected include Toyota models Avalon, Corolla, Prius, Tacoma, and Tundra as well as Lexus models ES 350 and IS 250/350, and the Pontiac Vibe.
The second recall concerned an accelerator pedal that would stick and cause sudden acceleration. Models affected by this recall include Toyota models Avalon, Corolla, Rav4, Sequoia and Tundra.
The third recall concerned the anti-lock braking software in the hybrid models including the Prius. These recalls affected over 7 million vehicles across the Toyota, Lexus and Pontiac lines. Defective parts were the cause of several accidents, some of which were fatal.
Investigations continue to determine whether there is an issue with the electronic system in the models, which could lead to a sudden surge in acceleration. Toyota denies the claims and stands by its efforts to fix faulty floor mats and sticky gas pedals.
