Sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) is not a new phenomenon, as many carmakers have produced motor vehicles susceptible to this defect since the 1970s. Currently, however, Toyota is under tremendous fire as a result of many of their most popular vehicles – including the Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Tundra, Sequoia and RAV4 – malfunctioning as a result of SUA. Sudden acceleration may result in tragic accidents, severe injuries and even death.
Although Toyota issued an extensive nationwide recall in October 2009 to try to correct their defective vehicles and save lives, it has been reported that less than half of the affected vehicles have been repaired, making it highly likely that more people will be victimized by SUA-related accidents. Toyota claims that the specific defects that are causing sudden unintended acceleration is sticky accelerator pedals or defective floor mats. Many experts contend, however, that electronic failures in the car also play a role in causing SUA-related collisions.
