In February 2010, Jacquelyn Donoghue of Holdrege, Nebraska filed a personal injury lawsuit against the Toyota corporation, alleging that her 2006 Toyota Prius suddenly and unintentionally sped up, crashed into another vehicle, seriously injured her and killed her husband. Sudden unintended acceleration, a serious automotive defect, has recently been grabbing nationwide headlines as a result of the severe injuries and deaths it is allegedly causing.
When SUA occurs, a car will suddenly speed up despite the fact that the driver is NOT pressing the accelerator. Additionally, the driver is unable to slow or stop the car via the vehicle's brake system.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that more than 2,100 SUA claims have been filed to date, and upwards of 100 people have died as a result of these accidents. Although Toyota has issued a massive, national recall due to the probability of sudden unintended acceleration, less than 50 percent of affected vehicles have been fixed as of March 2010, according to reports. Some of the makes of the cars recalled include the Prius, Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, Avalon, Camry and Corolla.
