Toyota is a major, well-respected car manufacturer that has recently come under major fire due to a potential defect in a number of popular models. Sparking a massive nationwide recall, sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) refers to the event in which a vehicle speeds up uncontrollably despite the fact that the driver is not pushing on the accelerator pedal – and without him/her being able to slow or stop the car via the brake system.
In Minnesota, a man sentenced to 8 years in prison due to his role in a fatal car accident may be exonerated as a result of claims that sudden unintended acceleration caused his car to uncontrollably speed up. Koua Fong Lee from Laos was driving his pregnant wife and child home from church on a Sunday when he claims his 1996 Toyota Camry malfunctioned by suddenly, unintentionally accelerating. Lee has always contended that he is innocent and that SUA was responsible for the three fatalities that resulted from the car crash. His appeal is currently being litigated.
