Last year, nearly 1,300 individuals were killed on Michigan roadways, costing the state more than $1.4 billion, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Despite the fact that driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs and speeding contributed to 30 percent and 23 percent of traffic fatalities (respectively), some of these accidents resulted from vehicle equipment failure, such as sudden unintended acceleration.
Though reported to occur in cars made by a number of different manufacturers, sudden and unintentional acceleration has most recently been associated with Toyota cars, including specific years of the Sequoia, Tundra, Camry, Corolla, Avalon, Venza, RAV4 and Highlander. NHTSA reports that more than 100 individuals throughout the U.S. have been killed in collisions alleged to have been cause by unintended acceleration.
