More than 200 people died in car accidents on Maine's roadways last year, costing the state nearly $160 million, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Some of these accidents are caused by debris in the road, driver distraction, intoxication, inexperience or reckless driving. In other cases, however, a defect with some part of the vehicle can interfere with otherwise safe driving and cause serious, potentially fatal motor vehicle crashes. When a defective piece of car equipment plays a role in causing a car accident, victims will have a strong legal claim against the auto maker – and they will be entitled to seek financial compensation for their medical bills, permanent disabilities, property damage, lost wages, pain and suffering.
Over the years, everything from a vehicle's tires to its steering system have been reported to be defective in various types of vehicles. Most recently, however, the Toyota Corporation has come under intense fire due to reports that sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) is causing serious, life-threatening crashes in a number of popular vehicles (including the Avalon, Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Matrix, Prius, Sequoia and Tundra).
NHTSA reports that 102 Americans, to date, have been killed as a result of sudden acceleration. Although Toyota issued a voluntary recall, which included about 6 million cars in the U.S, some argue that the company never fixed the real problem. The issue has sparked a massive debate surrounding the root of the problem. The real question, however, is how safe are these vehicles?
If you or someone you care about has been injured in what you believe to have been a sudden acceleration accident, contact a sudden acceleration lawyer in Maine for legal help.
